be sculptural in quality and will incorporate writings, photos,
drawings, and personal items that reflect each students ideas about the
transition from middle school to high school.
4 hrs. min. to a several day long workshop
Sculptural Basketry

embellished. We will cover how collage, drawing and painting can be
used in the basket. No prior experience necessary.
4 hours
Ribbed Basketry
Learn a versatile style of constructing baskets that can easily
be adapted to non-traditional shapes. Create a melon basket. No
experience required.

Plant Spirit Baskets
Connecting with the wisdom and healing nature of the plant world
will be the starting point for creating unique baskets. When one is
guided by an intention to bring healing and balance into an artistic
form remarkable things come into being. This class will be spent out in
the woods as well as in the studio, as we learn about our plant
neighbors and the secrets they have to share with us.
1-2 days long

Decorative Papers
|
Decorative Papers
In this workshop we will work with rice flour paste and pigment
to make our own paste papers. This is an old technique that combines
the fun of finger-painting with stamping to create pattern on damp
paper. Once dried the paper can have further layers of color and
pattern added to it, using more paste, washes of paint, wax resist, and
stamping color on to the surface. This workshop stretches the
imagination, and the sky is the limit to the kinds of colors and
textures you can come up with. There will be many examples of what can
be done, and how to use the papers in bookmaking, card-making ,and
other projects. Contact time: 8-12 hours in: 2 or 3 day segments of 3-4
hours each.
Materials fee: $25 per person.

Hand Spinning
|
Beginning Spinning
Participants will learn how to spin on a drop spindle as well as
a wheel. We will begin spinning wool, and learn how to select and
prepare a fleece for spinning. Basic spinning and plying techniques
will be taught. Washing and setting the twist, as well as storage of
fiber will be covered. Spinning in the grease as well as spinning
roving will be experienced. Handouts covering the basic techniques will
be given to each participant.

Adventures in Spinning

alpaca, angora, silk and how to blend fibers for unique yarns. Fancy
techniques such as long draw for speed spinning, boucle plying, and
wrapping. Prior spinning experience is necessary.

Spinning Brush-up
Bring your own wheel, your questions and improve your spinning
skills. Learn how to select and sort a fleece, for specific projects.
Learn fancy spinning techniques, like long draw, boucle plying, and
wrapping. Prior spinning experience is necessary.
3 hours
Weaving a "Magic" Bag
Using a small cardboard loom, and a unique way of warping we will
create a small bag that is bound on all sides. Nothing to unravel! We
will also ply yarns by hand to make a rope for a carrying strap. This
is a great way to use up yarn scraps. This form of weaving can be
easily scaled up to make larger projects.
2-3 hours
Beginning Felting
Using washed carded wool we will learn how to make simple felted
objects, such as a ball, small bag and flat piece of felted cloth.
Learning how to embellish and create designs in the felt will also be
covered.

Plant Dye Talk
Using a slide show developed over many years, we will look at
historical dye plants, as well as our own local plants. Extensive yarn
sample books will be shown to give participants accurate information on
the colors that can be obtained. A self- published booklet, "Dyes From
Plants," is also available for participants. It covers Indigo dye
baths, as well as mordanting and dyeing wool with fresh plant materials.

Workshop Policy:
I am happy to travel to present a workshop. I usually charge by the
day, ($250) plus materials fee, travel and room and board. (I am happy
to stay in someone's home.)
I am also happy to host a workshop at Greeneleaf. If you have a
group of friends who wish to share the cost we can accommodate between
6-10 people here. Costs would be negotiable, but the $250 plus
materials is a good guideline.
Check the teaching schedule to see if I am teaching at Greeneleaf Studio, or other places.
